Tim Thurnau, NASM CPT

Tim got his first taste of competitive athletics in high school back in Idaho, where he played one year of football, ran cross country, wrestled, and threw shot and discus. He earned 9 Varsity Letters as well as a state placing in wrestling his Senior year of high school. He went on to wrestle in college at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) for 4 years in the 197 pound weight class. He also threw shot and discus at the collegiate level, making the postseason in track & field his Junior Year. In addition to wrestling and throwing, his last year of college he went through several MMA fight camps in the hopes of pursuing the sport at a higher level, but decided instead to turn his focus to strength training.

As his action-packed college sports career drew to a close, he knew he needed a competitive outlet, and it wasn’t long before he found strongman. He took first place at both of his first two shows in the 105 kilogram weight class and earned a spot in the 2016 strongman nationals. He still trains and competes regularly; currently preparing to compete at the 2019 USS nationals in the 110 kilogram weight class.

Even during his time as a high school athlete he knew he wanted to coach, and sporadically worked with high school students in Idaho while he was home from RIT. During his final year of college, he began coaching for G2 World Wrestling Academy in Rochester, NY, a club which produced several national- and world-caliber wrestlers. During his time at G2 he began working individually with his athletes, specifically focusing on weight training. He leapt at the the opportunity to pass on the lessons about strength training he wished he’d been taught through the years. When G2 eventually closed its doors, his athletes stayed with him, and he continued to work with them wherever he could. In late 2018 he transitioned over to the East Ave. Barbell coaching staff, where he provides a unique perspective derived from his richly varied background in athletics. Currently holds Sports Performance certifications from NASM and a NYS Coaching Certification and all that entails.
